A farm boy reluctantly becomes a member of the undead when a girl he meets turns out to be part of a band of vampires who roam the highways in stolen cars.









Over time, it has gained a strong cult following and is often regarded as an unique and influential vampire film. Several cast members, including Bill Paxton and Lance Henriksen, had previously appeared in Aliens.
No fangs, no castles — just drifters traveling the American Southwest in a blacked-out van. The neo-Western aesthetic and Tangerine Dream's score give it a mood entirely unlike any other vampire film. Its cult rehabilitation after initial underperformance has made original materials significantly more desirable over time.
Produced on a modest budget, Near Dark relied on practical effects and atmospheric cinematography. The film received positive reviews from critics but performed poorly at the box office. Over time, it has gained a strong cult following and is often regarded as an unique and influential vampire film.
