Set during World War II, a German army garrison is sent to guard a mountain pass in a village in Romania's Carpathian mountains and sets up barracks in an ancient stone fortress. Two of the soldiers unwittingly release a mysterious entity that kills or corrupts those within its influence, drawing the attention of a Gestapo commander, a Jewish scholar, and a mysterious traveller.









However, it has since gained a cult following, particularly for its visuals, music, and unique place within 1980s horror cinema. The production faced significant editing and studio interference, resulting in a version that differs from Mann’s original vision.
Michael Mann's WWII supernatural horror — a Nazi garrison disturbing something ancient, scored by Tangerine Dream — with the film's troubled production and Mann's subsequent disavowal making it one of cinema's great cult objects: a genuinely unique vision available only in incomplete form.
